In the renewed system of Aratos Earth Observation Data Platform the updated Snow Cover layer is added. Snow cover, also called snowpack, is the amount of land covered by snow at any given time. It includes both new snow and previous snow and ice that have not melted.
Snow cover is an indicator of climate change, but it also exerts an influence on climate. On a more local scale, snow cover is important for humans and ecosystems, who rely on snowmelt to replenish streams and groundwater. Snow cover also keeps the soil moist, so if the snow melts away earlier in the spring, the soil may dry out sooner, which can stress plants and increase the risk of wildfire.
We continue to innovate with space technologies since 2005.
